Before We Were Trans est une histoire nouvelle et différente du genre, qui ne cherche pas à être exhaustive ou définitive, mais - en mélangeant culture, féminisme et politique - à élargir la portée de ce que nous considérons comme l'histoire trans en racontant les histoires de personnes à travers le monde dont l'expérience du genre a été transgressive, ou non caractérisée par des catégories stables ou binaires. Nous transportant de la Venise de la Renaissance à l'Angola du XVIIe siècle, du Japon d'Edo à l'Amérique du Nord, les histoires que ce livre raconte posent des questions et résistent aux conclusions simples. Elles défient la terminologie et les catégories occidentales modernes - notamment la catégorie des « trans » elle-même. Mais les raconter fournit une histoire qui reflète la richesse de la réalité trans moderne plus fidèlement.
