Die drei letzten Erzählungen Thomas Manns sind zwischen 1940 und 1953 entstanden, in den Jahren also, als er an seinen großen Romanen Joseph und seine Brüder , Doktor Faustus , Der Erwählte und Felix Krull gearbeitet hat. Die Schauplätze dieser Erzählungen sind sehr unterschiedlich: Indien in den Vertauschten Köpfen (1940), Ägypten und der Berg Sinai in der Mosesgeschichte Das Gesetz (1943/44) und Deutschland in Die Betrogene (1953). Und entsprechend gegensätzlich sind auch die Themen. Auf die »Geschichte von der schönhüftigen Sita und ihren beiden Gatten« folgt die Mosesgeschichte Das Gesetz , die Franz Werfel als ein »Vorspiel auf der Orgel« bezeichnet hat, und schließlich Die Betrogene als »Tod in Düsseldorf« eine Art »Gegenschöpfung« zum Tod in Venedig .
