Which first sounds like fun little sci-fi story is really a deep dive into what it means to be human and if there is something that makes a person inherently human and things inherently non-human. It's about whether there's aspects to human thought and behaviour that can't be learned and reproduced by an algorithm, a soul if you will.
I read it because it's on the school curriculum this year and I just wanted to know what it's about and I'm really glad I did. It's a book that will only get more relevant as technology progresses and that will spark important debates.

This book is definitely worth the hype! Although sceptical at first, unsure if it would live up to my expectations, I ended up giving a 5-star rating and even shed a tear or two at the end. Following a group of 4 college freinds as they navigate their way through life, Yanagihara lets us experience what true friendship and suffering are like. Every single page is beautifully written and encapsulating. This is a story that will stay with you forever.

It's a great example of the unreliable narrator as the reader only gets to know June's own thoughts, and she's great at justifying herself. It's a book that will keep you own your toes because you're constantly required not to forget to make your own judgement of things.

Seethaler beschreibt mit seiner klaren, schnörkellosen Sprache die Menschen im "Café ohne Namen" in der Wiener Leopoldstadt in den 60er Jahren. Aus der Persespektive des Wirtes Robert Simon porträtiert er die einfachen Leute mit ihren Hoffnungen und Sehnsüchten.
Evelyn Hugo tells her story of fame and what it cost her. You might think that the book is really about her husbands, after all, that's what the title suggests. The truth is though, that they only play supporting roles in her eventful, colourful and sometimes dangerous life. This was such a captivating story, I'm not surprised it will be made into a movie soon.

Cette équipe de policiers est attachante, on a réellement l'impression de les connaître personnellement à force de les retrouver dans ces romans. Et c'est pourquoi ce roman nous bouleverse.

Manuel Rivas (*1957, La Coruña, Spanien) hat Journalismus studiert und sammelte schon als 15jähriger erste Erfahrungen bei einer Tageszeitung. Er schreibt auch heute noch regelmäßig für El País und ist Herausgeber der Kulturzeitschrift Luzes de Galizia. Einen Teil seiner Reportagen publizierte er in zwei Essaybänden, die eine starke Verbundenheit mit seiner Heimatregion bezeugen (Galicia, bonsai atlántico, 1990 und Toxos e flores, 1993). Rivas begann seine literarische Laufbahn mit lyrischen Texten, doch überregional bekannt wurde er in den 90er Jahren mit Romanen und Erzählungen. Der Erzählband Un millón de vacas (1990) wurde ein großer Erfolg. Ein Jahr später erschien sein erster Roman Os comedores de patacas, der zweite folgte 1994, En salvaxe compaña (dt. In wilder Gesellschaft, 1998). Die mehrfach ausgezeichnete Anthologie ¿Qué me queres, amor? (1995) vereint Erzählungen, in denen Rivas Härte und Einsamkeit, aber auch Zärtlichkeit, Verständnis und Humor in zwischenmenschlichen Beziehungen nachzeichnet. Basierend auf drei Erzählungen aus diesem Band entstand der Film »Die Zunge der Schmetterlinge«, der auch in den USA großen Anklang fand. Einen internationalen Erfolg erzielte Rivas 1998 mit dem Roman O lapis do carpinteiro (dt. Der Bleistift des Zimmermanns, 2000) über die Geschichte einer Liebe in den ersten Tagen des Spanischen Bürgerkriegs, der gerade in Spanien verfilmt wird. 1999 erschien Ela, maldita alma, eine Sammlung von Erzählungen, die der Autor selbst als den Endpunkt einer Reise nach innen bezeichnet: vom Gesellschaftsportrait in Un millón de vacas (1990) zu den Abgründen der Seele in Ela, maldita alma. Eine von ihm selbst zusammengestellte Auswahl aus seinen Erzählbänden ist unter dem Titel Die Nacht, in der ich auf Brautschau ging erschienen. Manuel Rivas führt virtuos die Linie der jüngeren Generation spanischer Schriftsteller fort, die im Gefolge Eduardo Mendozas dem Erzählen wieder eine herausragende Stellung verliehen haben. Mit scharfer Beobachtungsgabe und großer Sprachgewandtheit ersinnt er suggestive Geschichten von Geheimnis und Magie, die sich gleichermaßen aus den Begebenheiten des alltäglichen Lebens wie aus der mündlichen Erzähltradition seiner Heimat speisen. Rivas wurde mit mehreren Literaturpreisen ausgezeichnet und erhielt u.a. 1990 und 1998 den Spanischen Kritikerpreis, 1996 den Torrente Ballester Preis und den Spanischen Nationalpreis der Literatur sowie 2001 den Literaturpreis von Amnesty International. Manuel Rivas lebt mit seiner Familie in dem kleinen Dorf Urroa an der galicischen Costa da Morte.
